Each application portal has the name of the program you applied to will be on the top left corner and the checklist can be seen on the right hand of the screen. The Checklist lets you know what’s still missing from your application. Here are some things you may see in your checklist (the checklist is different for everybody!):

  • Resume.
  • Statement of Purpose.
  • Recommendations: Each application requires 2 letters of recommendation. Applicants should plan to submit either: one (1) academic reference and one (1) professional reference or two (2) academic references. Letters should come from faculty, supervisors, and others who know you well in an academic or professional setting. At least one letter should come from a faculty member who taught you in a class and can speak to your potential for rigorous graduate study. Recommenders must use their professional email address, i.e. “@gwu.edu” and not a personal account, i.e. “@yahoo.com”, “@gmail.com”. More information can be found on our website under the “Letters of Recommendation” tab.
  • Transcripts: From your undergraduate institution, community college transcripts, and other documents from programs from which you received academic credit. You may upload unofficial transcripts in the application. More information can be found on our website under the “Transcripts” tab.
  • Foreign Language Coursework: If your program requires a foreign language, but you did not provide evidence of your coursework in your application, you will receive an email and the requirement will appear in your checklist.
  • English Language Test Scores: International applicants and Permanent Residents who have not received a degree from a US institution or have not met one of the English Language exemptions is required to submit academic IELTS, TOEFL or PTE scores. More information on English Language Test Score requirements and exemptions can be found on our website.
  • MIPP Essay: Applicants to the Master of International Policy and Practice (MIPP) program must submit a second essay, the prompts for which are available on our website under the “Statement of Purpose” tab. MIPP applicants should include this essay in the same word/PDF document as their Statement of Purpose, separating both documents by the title- Statement of Purpose and MIPP essay.
  • 4 Year US BA Equivalence: Applicants who have earned their degrees outside of the US must hold a degree equivalent a U.S., 4-year Bachelor’s degree. Most 3-year degrees outside of the Bologna process do not meet this requirement. Please note, if a US 4-year Bachelor degree equivalency is not demonstrated, students will be required to provide a credential evaluation from a NACES approved organization, that certifies the coursework as meeting our requirement. More on this requirement can be found on our website under the “Transcripts” tab.
  • GRE Scores: If you chose to submit GRE scores, and they were received by our office, it would be in your checklist. Official scores can be sent to code 5246. Please note that none of our programs require GRE scores.

If you have questions about items in your checklist that you believe are there in error, believe the status of one of the items is incorrect or would like to submit a missing document, please let us know at esiagrad@gwu.edu. Documents should be submitted in PDF format in the correct orientation.
